Artifact Type: Texts and their syllabic rhythmic values

Rationale For Inclusion: Competency D8 states that a teacher of vocal music shall understand the impact of reading ability on student achievement in music, recognize the varying reading comprehension and fluency levels represented by students, and possess the strategies to assist students to read music content materials more effectively. In vocal music, reading is especially important in terms of song texts. For students in the upper grades who do not read music this can be something to "grab a hold of" and for elementary students this can be a good way to practice reading skills. It is good practice because the students have a chance to hear the words from the mouth of the teacher and then associate those words with the written examples on the board. The ability to read is such an important skill and I think that getting practice is good no matter what class it comes from.
