Name: Charles Moe

Competency: D2

Artifact Title: Teaching Music to Children with Autism

Artifact Type: An article found in the Music Educators Journal entitled, "Teaching Music to Children with Autism: Understandings and Perspectives" by Ryan Hourigan.

Rationale for Inclusion: Competency D2 states that a teacher of vocal music must understand and apply the research base for and the best practices of kindergarten or primary, intermediate, and middle level and high school education. This article puts to use research on students with Autism and gives tips on teaching music to those students. The article touches on subjects such as disruptive behavior, modeling and demonstration, communication strategies, and other important topics. During my student teaching I encountered several students with autism and I consider the information found in this article to be very useful and helpful.
