D2 Orff Language
Name: Charles Moe
Competency: D2
Artifact Title: Orff Language
Artifact Type: An article entitled, "The Importance of Language in the Schulwerk" by Eric Ventura from the Summer 2008 edition of The Orff Echo.
Rationale for Inclusion: Competency D2 states that a teacher of music shall understand and apply the research base for and the best practices of kindergarten or primary, intermediate, and middle level and high school education. This article talks about the importance of language in learning, specifically in the Orff Schulwerk music education method; one of the most popular methods of music education in this country and the world. The practice of appropriate language is especially important because it is necessary for understanding that the teacher use language that is age appropriate for the students. This is especially true at the elementary level. There is nothing wrong with learning new vocabulary, but if it takes too long to explain, a teacher must wonder if it is actually helpful, or simply a wast of learning time. Therefore in my opinion a teacher must strive to speak with language that is easily understood by the students.
