Artifact Type: An article by Dian Cummings Persellin entitled "Brain-Based Education: A New Science or Science-Fiction?" from the Spring 2009 edition of The Orff Echo.
Rationale for Inclusion: Competency D2 states that a teacher of music shall understand and apply the research base for and the best practices of kindergarten or primary, intermediate, and middle level and high school education. With all the research done on education over the years, it is hard to determine what are the "best" practices of education. This article is on the subject of "Brain-Based Education." The article gives an overview of the science of education, some of the claims in defense of Brain-Based Education, and some of the possible faults. Whatever the case, Brain-Based education has already become a heavily researched phenomenon that is considered serious business by many people.
